Tell Me About Inclined Platform Lifts
Pictured here is an example of what is generally referred to as an Inclined Platform Lift or IPL for short. Like its cousin the stairlift, an IPL is an over the stairway accessibility solution. But an IPL replaces the stairlift's chair with a platform which allows it to accommodate wheelchairs easily. EHLS offers clients two IPLs from two different manufacuters. The ES-125 made by Savaria is shown here. This IPL can be used in residential or public settings though its track cannot turn corners so it can only be used on straight stairways.

Our second IPL offering is called the Carrier-Lift and is made by ThyssenKrupp Access. The Carrier-Lift is intended for use in public settings and its track can turn corners if necessary.

Some Features of the ES-125
The ES-125 platform rides on a track that can be wall mounted or supported by a factory supplied post system. Platforms come in three sizes including one measuring 27.5"x36", a second measuring 28.5"x44" and a third that measures 30"x48". This ES-125 has an optional folding seat which allows it to serve people with a wide range mobility limitations. The unit pictured here does not have the optional folding arms.
-
When not in use the platform can be folded against the wall to provide space for people using the stairs on foot. Depending on the options selected the ES125 will take between 10" and 13" of the stairway width in the folded position. The standard ES125 comes with a platform that must be folded manually. An optional power folding platform is available.
-
The ES125 is versatile and, when configured properly, can be used to provide access over exterior stairways.

ES125 Plus
The ES125 is available with two different drive systems. The standard system uses a winding drum and a steel cable to propel the platform along the track. The winding drum and associated equipment must be placed in a separate machine room usually located under the stairway. The ES125 Plus pictured here uses a chain drive system enclosed in the tower at the top of the stairs which eliminates the need for a machine room.

But Will an IPL Fit?
Despite their wonderful features and versatility IPLs aren't as widely used in residential settings as you might expect. The most significant factor limiting their use is the amount of space they require. One area of particular concern is the lower landing. In this area the ES125 needs a minimum of 55" of clear space measured from the bottom stair (dimension E on the drawing) to accommodate a 27.5" long platform. This requirement grows to 70" if you choose the 30" platform. Additional clear space is usually needed to provide manuevering room for a wheelchair. Many homes do not have the open space this lift requires. By visiting your home and taking the appropriate measurements an EHLS representative can tell you if an IPL will be an option.

The cost to install an ES125 in a residential setting begins at about $9,000 and will vary based on the amount of site preparation required and the number of optional features a client chooses.
