About Inclined Lifts

Inclined Platform Lifts or IPL’s are lifts that to carry a wheelchair user over an existing staircase on a level platform – a little like a flying carpet. The platform folds-up when the lift is not in use – so the stairs are open and passable.

  • Where Can They Be Used: Inclined Platform Lifts (IPL’s) can be used both indoors and out and in residential and commercial settings. Like stairlifts, IPL’s are available for both straight and curved staircases.

What Does an IPL Include:

Track: IPL’s platforms travel on a track

Mounting: IPL track is either wall mounted track or supported by a post system that secures into the treads of the stairs

Platform: The rectangular platform can provide access from two or three sides and will include small ramps that fold up when traveling and down to roll-off at the bottom of the stairs. When not in use the platform can be folded up (manually or with power) against the wall to provide space for people using the stairs on foot. Depending on the options selected an IPL will take between 10″ and 13″ of the stairway width in the folded position.

Options: IPLs can be equipped with folding arms to provide security as well as folding seats for non-wheelchair users.

Capacities: Inclined Platform Lifts (IPL) have a weight capacity of up to 450 lbs.

Will an IPL Fit? Despite their wonderful features and versatility IPLs aren’t as widely used in residential settings as you might expect. The most significant factor limiting their use is the amount of space they require.

The lower landing is of particular concern – as it must have room for the entire platform. A minimum of 55+ inches in front to the last step is required for the IPL platform to land. Additional clear space is usually needed to provide room for maneuvering a wheelchair. An IPL can fit on a staircase with a minimum clear width of 34″ – but the more space the better.

We will be happy to do a free in-home assessment to determine if an IPL will be a viable option for you.

Thank you so very, very much. You made my day and life much easier for me and my daughter, who called EHLS for the wheelchair lift. Thank you EHLS!

My lift has been all done for a little while and I’m sorry it has taken me so long to send this note, but I did want to say that my lift and deck installation is beautiful and functional and I want to thank everyone at EHLS and all of the associated contractors for your hard work and attention to detail and follow-up. I know I’m forgetting many, but I remember Susana, James, David, Tony, and the electricians. I wish the scheduling would have offered more notice, but it is all worth it in the end, as this lift has opened new horizons of mobility for me. Again, please pass my thanks along to everyone. I have sent along these same sentiments to Mark at the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities. Hoping you all have a wonderful holiday season!

Last week I received a wheelchair lift and I just wanted to thank EHLS for providing me with the lift. I think you guys have a wonderful program, and you make people’s lives much easier. This wheelchair lift has giving me my independence back and I’m very grateful for that. It’s such a great feeling being able to get in and out of my house and not having to rely on family members and friends for their help. I would also like to thank the guys who installed the lift. Thank you again for this wheelchair lift, it has truly changed and brought so much happiness into my life.
